    1. Events:

The second Pan-European IEFS Conference was held between 17-20 May 2001 at the University of Macedonia, in Thessaloniki, Greece. Its theme was on "Finance, Trade and Factor Mobility Issues in the Global Economy". It was jointly organised by the University of Macedonia and IEFS-UK.

A total of 56 papers were presented by authors representing universities and academic institutions from 15 European countries and the USA, on a wide variety of topics ranging from International Trade to Factor Mobility and International Finance. Invited lectures were delivered by Professor Kwan Choi (Iowa State University, President of IEFS), Professor Ioannis Leventakis (Athens University of Economics and Business) and Professor Mark Taylor (Warwick Business School, Warwick University).

A selection of papers will appear on a special issue of the Review of International Economics - see below Call for Papers under item 2.

On behalf of IEFS and IEFS-UK, Professor Kwan Choi, Dr. Tapan Biswas (Hull University, President), Dr. George Agiomirgianakis (City University, Secretary) and Dr. Keith Pilbeam (City University, Treasurer) greeted the Conference, noting its organisational as well as scientific success. There was ample opportunity for networking amid the various very enjoyable social events. Those culminated in the visit to the archaeological site of ancient Vergina on Sunday 20 May. Our warmest thanks go to the local organising committee (Professors Dimitrios Papadopoulos, Costas Karfakis, Harry Papapanagos, Athanasios Noulas and Yannis Hadjidimitriou) and to Mrs Nadia Stavropoulou, Secretary of the Public & International Relations Office of the University of Macedonia, for doing such a superb organisational job. We are also grateful to the Commercial Bank of Greece, the National Bank of Greece and the Prefecture of Thessaloniki for providing generous financial sponsorship. Some photos are already available from our web site (http://www.city.ac.uk/economics/iefs/iefs.htm previous events)

The next Pan-European Conference is planned for May 2002 - see Forthcoming Events below.

    2. Call for Papers, special issue of the Review of International Economics.

A special volume of the Review of International Economics will be devoted to the publication of selected proceedings from the May 2001 Conference. It will be edited by Professors Costas Karfakis (Macedonia University) and Nicholas Sarantis (London Guildhall University).

The deadline for submissions is 1 July 2001. Papers should be sent in TRIPLICATE (hard copies please, no-email submissions will be accepted) to:

Prof. Nicholas Sarantis, Department of Economics, London Guildhall University, 31 Jewry Street, London EC3N 2EY, United Kingdom. For information only, use E-mail: saran@lgu.ac.uk

Criteria by which papers will be selected for publication are as follows:

    a) Papers must have been presented at the joint Macedonia/IEFS-UK Conference at Macedonia University Thessaloniki, Greece, May 2001.

    b) All papers including the two papers by the keynote speakers will be reviewed by two referees: one that could be a conference participant and another non-participant (outsider). Papers will then be selected on scientific merit, as judged by the editors and on the basis of the reviewers' comments.

    c) Papers that are empirical should be applied to more than two countries. Country-specific papers will not be accepted due to the international character of the journal.

    d) It is envisaged that about 10 papers will be collected, possibly including the two papers by the keynote speakers.

    e) All papers must have incorporated the comments received by the conference participants.

f.) The most important criterion of the selection process will be the high quality of the paper.

          3. Collective Volume

The review process for the collective volume is in its final stage and we hope that by mid summer we will be ready to announce more details. This process has been slow so far due to many paper submissions.

      4. IEFS-Europe

At the Thessaloniki conference, Prof Choi supported our aim to create IEFS (Europe). He suggested that we should send a proposed constitution for IEFS(Europe) to him, which will eventually be discussed by the IEFS Central executive committee. We shall also contact other European Chapters of IEFS in an effort to bring them on board. The membership of the executive committee of IEFS(Europe) must be drawn from various European countries. Hope we will be able to have more on this by the end of the summer.

  5. Forthcoming events We are planning two events in the forthcoming academic year (2001/2): 1.) A one-day workshop will be held in November 2001 in a venue in the UK (most probably London).

2.) Our annual Conference will take place in May 2002 somewhere in Europe (possibly in Crete).

Efforts will be made to finalise ideas as soon as possible. Details will be announced in the next issue of the Newsletter and will be posted on the Website.

  6. Membership of IEFS-UK Let us draw attention here to the fact that all participants of the Thessaloniki conference are automatically entitled to membership of the IEFS-UK and should complete and send a registration form with their interest, emails and address to: Dr. Keith Pilbeam, Department of Economics, City University, London, EC1V OHB NO MONEY is required as it has been included in the Thessaloniki conference fee. You may download the application form from our web site http://www.city.ac.uk/economics/iefs/iefs.htm (look for Applications). However, if you have completed this form in the past you do not have to do it again unless your research or professional address has changed.
